Standing the Final Watch The Last Brigade Book 1 eBook William Alan Webb

I enjoyed the story and book that this author wrote. I enjoyed, but being Army I had to drop it a star. Their were several inaccuracies and some parts are way over the top. However this is fantasy/fiction. It is not supposed to be real. When inaccuracies occur it bugs me a little just like movies. Hence the -1 star.

The plot overall is plausible. Militarily force structure wise the Army does not have separate mechanized infantry and separate armor Battalions anymore. Combined Arms Battalions with 2x Mechanized Infantry and 2x Armor Companies as the firepower. As mentioned earlier Generals, even Special Operations Generals would not have made Rambo look like a sissie, with .50cal Desert Eagles. Maybe carrying a .45 since some Special Operations units started reusing .45s over the past decade.

I do look forward to the next book in the series. It has a great story, some interesting plot twists and are building the character base. Keep writing Mr. Webb, you have an interested fan that plans to follow this series.

Standing the Final Watch The Last Brigade Book 1 eBook William Alan Webb Reviews

Extremely entertaining and fast paced. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and about to begin book three in the series. I would have given the book five stars except for some technical errors, the most glaring of which was his characters saluting in doors. Mr. Webb the U.S. Army DOES NOT salute indoors, unless saluting the national colors (that is a recent change). In any case neither the Army nor Marines salute uncovered. Having said that, I think this book was really well done and enjoyable.
Loved this book from beginning to end. A new twist on the perceived end to the United States as we know it, and the future fight to bring it back using the military and military personnel from the past. The characters are not overly complex, and their is not a bunch of unnecessary drama to clog the story line. This will be a great series, of that I am certain. I have just started the second book and it picks up the action as if there was no space. I wish I could draw out reading this one until the third installment arrives, but that is very unlikely.
The three books that comprise this series (so far) are some of the best post-Collapse fiction I have read, truly epic in approach. The end of civilization as we know it is a bit scattershot, and seems to be an amalgam of every angry person's complaints about modern life, but it doesn't really matter. The story hinges on the plan to put a military unit into Long Sleep so that it can be there for the rebuilding phase; the unit is to be led by the U.S. finest fighting general, Nick Angriff. Of course, there is a conspiracy, there are enemies foreign and domestic, and the author pushes his politics a less than subtle way, as is his right.

At its heart, however, this series is a clear presentation of the military task faced by the new "7th Cavalry" in the American Southwest and its leader, and it is fascinating.
Author Webb has imagined a very well developed and detailed social, political and military world some 50 years in the future of the USA. After a slow start I gobbled up the book. The bad guys are bad, the good guys however are more of a mix. Some are hard chargers, ready to mix it up with the enemy, some are of dubious loyalty-and that makes for some good moments-and many are more interested in themselves than their mission. This makes for more interesting story telling than simply having the good guys slay bad guys in innovative ways.
The story barrels right along. Webb writes in a way that always has us wanting to see what is over the next hill-well the next page. We no sooner conclude one segment of the story than we eagerly seek to delve right into the next. I was up until 2 am reading, a very rare event for me.
I am so pleased with this story that I will load up my with the next chapter. I may be up until 2 am again. Lucky me.
I found this to be a great book with a common theme of many apocalypse type stories but with some great new twists and a great main character. General Angriff seems a bit like I imagine General Patton was and certainly 'apes' him with his Desert Eagle and attitude but I enjoyed his character. Certainly the twists with the suspended animation of all those soldiers is great but the sub-plots and twists keep the tension high.

The action is great when it occurs and the promise of some great action in the next book has me excited. As some readers have commented there is a decent amount of military jargon but if you are a military type reader then should not be problem. A bit strange the constant need to come up with a variety slang terms for the enemy such as 'burps', jimbangs and several other terms. Not sure of the author's point to doing that and seemed to just add a few lines to chapters so bit wasted space to me. The strange hidden groups of ppl/spies amongst the survivors is a bit frustrating trying to work it all out and it is certainly looking like the General has about 3-4 enemies that he is going to have to deal with over the series.
For me , probably a disappointing scene was when Green Ghost captured Bettison and Bettison sets off the grenades, it is very inconsistent because chapters earlier Green Ghost was so careful to catch Watts and disable her from suiciding and here was a major top bad guy and he just holds a gun to his head letting him put both hands into his pocket and set off a grenade???? Like WTF? what was that about? Unless it was done because Green Ghost is a double agent it was poor writing to handle that scene that way when they had been so adamant about prisoners and Ghost had shown how well he can capture someone, especially as they had already had more of the spies suicide with pills.

So if you like Military action, almost Sci-fi and post apocalypse scenarios then I think you would enjoy it. I grabbed the sample and read it first so if you are not sure then my suggestion is to do that and it will give you a good idea
