Spy Honor The Hearts and Thrones Series Amy Raby Books

This book takes place 4 or 5 years before Assassin's Gambit, and I really wish I'd read it first. While each book can be read as a standalone, I didn't really appreciate or understand Rhianne or Jan-Torres in Assassin's Gambit because I hadn't read their book first. I also went into this book with some preconceived ideas that made me impatient for certain parts because I'd read Gambit first.

I loved Assassin's Gambit so much, I was afraid this book would be a let down. It wasn't. I immediately fell in love with the characters, which really drew me into the story. I don't think this one was quite as action-packed as Gambit, but it was pretty exciting. Raby has a way of drawing you into the story and making you feel like you are the characters living the adventure. The bronze alligator part actually brought tears to my eyes.

I also loved the familiars in this book. They added an enjoyable aspect to Raby's world building. I fell in love with Sashi and had to laugh at his blood-thirsty nature.

I didn't feel the ending was quite as strong as Gambit's, though, but overall I loved this book, and I'm hoping to see more of Rhianne and Jan-Torres in book 4 since they weren't in book 3.

Spy Honor The Hearts and Thrones Series Amy Raby Books Reviews

The author continues her first book as, apparently, the world's preeminent strategic plotter of war, love, peace, caturanga and whatever else happens to come up. As good as her books are, the talent is wasted on fantasy-romance fans who are escaping from the world. I'd recommend Raby for secretary of state, national security advisor, or maybe even higher. Not that she is any slouch at world-creation either, as the same setting continues to reveal new fascinating twists. My comparison to famous treatises on strategy is not accidental either, as one of her principle characters is always reading these kinds of books.

This 2nd book in the series is a flashback, occurring in time before the 1st book. It's well done and manages to be terribly suspenseful as we are not at all sure how the foreknown result can come about. But I would prefer reading it prior to Assassin's Gambit, I think, as it would make that book even more hair-raising, uncertain and believable. There is not as much continual action as Gambit, but near the end an interesting description of battle strategy. The author also gets a little carried away with healing magic in Honor. Might have given it 5 stars except that Gambit sort of reset my reference point. )
I loved the original book in the series, Assassin's Gambit, but if possible, I loved this book even more. I simply couldn't put it down until I finished it all. Imagine a busy mother of two, standing by the stove cooking dinner with a in her hand. That was me, for the last few days, when I carried this book with me all the time and couldn't wait to get back to reading in every spare moment.

The main characters are just perfect, and the love story between them is really well done. This pair drew my eye already when they briefly appeared in Assassin's Gambit, and they didn't disappoint. Moreover, the scope of the fantasy elements and the story goes far beyond the romance genre, while keeping the love story within the main focus of the book. This in itself takes lots of skill.

Amy Raby develops an authentic, original world, rich with cultures and unique magic, inwardly logical and consistent all the way from the grand scheme of things down to every intricate detail. I felt almost sorry that this book was published and marketed as romance, as opposed to a major fantasy epic--but then, of course, I am a fantasy fan. As with the previous book, it has enough elements from both fantasy and romance, to appeal to the fans of both genres.

My only regret is that the book is over and I now have to wait for the third one in the series. In fact the withdrawal is so bad that I may just go back to rereading both books, to submerge into Amy Raby's rich world. I think we are witnessing the birth of a new major talent in the genre who will delight her readers for years to come.
The cast of characters Janto--the prince of Mosar, recently turned spymaster because his country is being overrun by Kjarr; Rhianne--a princess of Kjarr--the daughter of the emperor's run-away sister; Lucien--the son of Kjarr's emperor; The book clearly focuses on Rhianne and Janto, with the narrative switching back and forth between them. The plot opens with Janto, a shroud mage who is attempting to infiltrate the palace so that he can free one of his spies, as well as acquire military intelligence. After he pretends to be a gardener to sneak into the palace, he accidentally gains the attention of Rhianne, who is sitting in the garden, learning Mosar's language for her impending move to Mosar as the wife of the general who is slaughtering Mosarians so he can win the war and become the consul. When Janto overhears her butchering phrases, he cannot resist teasing her for her awful pronunciation. Soon he becomes her tutor, which leads to a growing friendship, which allows him to sneak into the palace, which . . . etc.
I am new to this genre, but appreciate already some attention to the subtleties of getting to know and love another person. While their attraction grows fairly steadily, it is not the "deus ex machina", "struck by lightning" approach which appears to be a trope of the genre (and which can become tiresome quickly). In this book, the narrative is more driven by the world situation (war, imperialism, slavery) than by the fiery attraction between the characters (though that is certainly moving along). The pace was steady and engaging I fell into the "just one more chapter" trap more than once.
If you enjoy fantasies with magic, love, wars, and adventures, give this one a try. It's a solid and engaging read.
